Even though you have saved hard, and booked and paid for a luxe-for-less trip of a lifetime, when the time comes to travel you don’t want your holiday to hit you hard in the wallet a second time. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to economise on holiday, without spoiling the fun. For a start, if you are staying in a good hotel, you can leave quite a few of your toiletries as home, because items such as soap, shampoo and conditioner are usually provided free of charge. Still in hotels, avoid the mini bar and room service at all cost, and do some grocery shopping for snacks, and easy meals such as breakfast; using hotel services, and eating out, can both add up. Before you travel you can check out, and download, any free travel apps which can help you to find deals in your destination such as happy hours, or discounts on theatre tickets. Another thing you can do before you leave home is check through deal sites such as Scoopon, Groupon and Living Social, for discounted tours, spa experiences and meal deals. If you staying in a destination where there is good public transport, forget taking taxis and look into bus and train services instead; these could save you money on airport transfers, as well as getting around for sightseeing and going out in general. In some countries, however, you can save money by renting a taxi for a day to go to a far flung beach or to see the sights. Just make sure you read up on the pros and cons, and safety issues, and don’t pay all the money for a return trip in advance. Local tourism bodies, and sometimes hotels and resorts, have brochures and coupons which offer discounted admission into museums and zoos, meal deals, and discounted tours. In big cities throughout the world there are museums and galleries which offer free days, or cheaper admission on specific days of the week or month, and you can also buy last minute theatre tickets in some destinations such as London. And finally, if you have a bank account or credit card, check into any perks or travel offerings they may have, such as discounted tickets, or entry into airport lounges.
