Staying at a luxury hotel is a wonderful indulgence, but even if you’ve secured a great deal on your room rate, you might find some of the extras you’ll need to pay for can hit your wallet hard. But the good news is that there are plenty of ways to save money at hotels. If you need to get online, for example, many hotels charge guests to use the internet in a rooms, sometimes in 24-hour blocks, but there is often free Wi-Fi in public areas including reception, and any lounges and bars. Also, unless it’s an emergency, never use the phone in your room. If you don’t have a mobile with you, or one which can make local calls, there should be a pay phone tucked away in the lobby, or you can tap into free Wi-Fi using a laptop or your phone, and an app such as Skype or WhatsApp. Another way to save money is where parking a car is concerned. If you have rented a car, parking at a hotel overnight will usually incur a daily fee, but in some cases self-parking can be free or offered at a cheaper rate in addition to valet parking. You can also politely ask on check-in if it can be included in your room rate. If you fancy a spot of pampering, hotel based beauty salons and spas are often extremely expensive; instead, plan to head out to a local outlet instead. Do your research before travelling, or ask locals if you get chatting. Finally, using a hotel laundry can be pricey, but if you’re staying in the downtown area of a big city, or even in some suburbs, go to a local launderette and DIY, or have a bag of clothes washed, dried and pressed for a reasonable fee.
