Singapore is one of the world’s most expensive cities, a popular destination packed with elaborate five-star-plus hotels and resorts, great designer shopping, and a lineup of celebrity and Michelin-starred restaurants. It’s also home to many lavish spas, but the cost of wiling away a lazy afternoon with a facial or massage can hit you hard in the wallet. So if you’re enjoying a luxe-for-less holiday in Singapore, but you’re still on a bit of a budget what can you do when it comes to saving money on pampering? The answer is to forego those glamorous spas which are tucked away in hotels, and head for a local outlet such as Healing Touch Spa. Voted as one of Singapore’s best value spas, there are eight locations across the city all close to MRT stations, which means there’s bound to be one near where you’re staying. The outlet I visited is at Alexis Condo, 352 Alexandra Road. I’d pre-booked a one-hour massage by phone, but after a friendly welcome on arrival I checked out the lineup of treatments on the menu, which included deep tissue oil massage and acupressure massage without oil, both costing S$55 for 60 minutes. There was also a detoxifying ginger scrub and a relaxing lavender scrub which is ideal after a long flight, costing S$35 for 30 minutes and a range of simple facials, and anti-ageing skin care products from Korea to purchase. My treatment for a slightly sore post-flight lower back was an Asian fusion oil massage which combined styles including the intense stretching of Thai, the robust kneading of Chinese, deep tissue and Swedish, at times using a light, fragrant oil. I had my own private room, which was meticulously clean, and my therapist was clearly an expert from the start. The hour flew by, and my sore lower back was eased to perfection.
