You’ve booked the holiday of your dreams, and allocated yourself a budget for spending, but it’s easy to slip up at hotels when it comes to paying for a long lineup of extras. One is your in-room minibar; unless it’s an emergency, never, ever buy anything from it as the prices for even a can of soft drink will be hugely inflated. Also, some minibars are automated, so if you remove anything, your account will be charged immediately for that item. Also watch out for those alluring bottles of mineral water left conveniently on your nightstand or in the bathroom; in most cases, if you open and drink one of them, and your account will be charged. Instead, to save money and enjoy drinks and snacks in your hotel room, head for a nearby supermarket or a convenience store to stock up, and where prices will be considerably cheaper.
Room service is another in-room indulgence which many of us like to enjoy on holiday, however, if you decide to order something, check for any additional fees and taxes beyond the delivery charge, which can be high depending on your destinations. Also, if you’re planning to order several different things during the evening, such as a bottle of wine and a meal, do it at the same time as you will be charged fees for each time something is delivered. If you want ice in your room late at night and it hasn’t been provided by a turndown service, check your hotel for self service ice machines in particular in US hotels, or ask for some ice at the bar. And finally, if your room rate includes a complimentary breakfast, be sure to make use of it, and check for other useful hotel freebies such as shuttle services, free snacks at the bar at night, and happy hour at the bar. Also booking a room with access to a private club or lounge can offer many inclusions and benefits, from free Wi-Fi to a complimentary breakfast, snacks and evening cocktails.
