Saving Money At The Commonwealth Games

Saving Money At The Commonwealth Games

The 2018 Commonwealth Games begins on April 4 on Queensland’s Gold Coast, with 11 days of major international sporting events taking place across the region. If you’re visiting to attend the games, there are a number of ways to save money while enjoying the action. One is to ditch your rental car (should you have one) and use public transport; it is free for ticketed spectators travelling to and from competition events on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane on the South East Queensland TransLink public transport network. This network includes the G:Link tram (which will run 24/7 during the games) 12 key bus routes, and trains (excluding Airtrain). Festival 2018 will take place at the same time as the games, from April 4-15, with a lineup of 12 days of entertainment in various locations across the coast. The festival kicks off with free concerts by Yothu Yindi and the Treaty Project, and The Cat Empire, both of which take place on the Main Stage at Surfers Paradise on April 4.

When it comes to eating and drinking there are plenty of bargains to be enjoyed around the Gold Coast, in particular in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, which are major hubs of the games entertainment wise. Many bars and restaurants have early bird offers and happy hours, as long as you don’t mind eating a little earlier, where you save up  40 or 50 per cent off a meal, or in some cases, off the total bill. Some of our favourite spots, and not just for a bargain, include Melbas in Surfers Paradise where you’ll pay $4 for Coronas on a Thursday night, and where there are daily meal specials including 2-4-1 dinners on a Wednesday night – it’s also a great place to watch sports. Meanwhile if you head to the cool themed bar Steampunk, also in Surfers Paradise, you can get jugs of beer and a balcony seat for just $10, and Waxy’s Irish Pub has a $3 steak for lunch or dinner on a Sunday and Monday, and a $3 chicken schnitzel on a Tuesday. And if you’re on the Gold Coast but not attending the games, a number of big screens have been positioned to share the action, including one at Circle on Cavil in Surfers Paradise.
